Les contrastes et les aplats<br \/>de couleurs indiquent de fa\u00e7on sommaire la profondeur de champ tandis que les \u00e9l\u00e9ments qui composent le paysage<br \/>semblent nous regarder avec le flegme vaporeux de ceux qui n\u2019ont plus rien \u00e0 prouver. Cet efet de suspension et l\u2019humour<br \/>qui s\u2019en d\u00e9gage donnent la sensation d\u2019\u00e9voluer dans l\u2019\u0153uvre comme dans un jeu de plateaux. Le spectateur peut avoir<br \/>l\u2019impression d\u2019atterrir sur une plan\u00e8te o\u00f9 les grandes figures de la vie terrestre cohabitent de fa\u00e7on aussi surprenante, voire<br \/>d\u00e9routante, que les clich\u00e9s des cartes postales promettant de \u00ab bons baisers des tropiques \u00bb. Pourtant, derri\u00e8re ces apparents<br \/>raccourcis symboliques, se cachent une connaissance \u00e9tendue de la peinture dont l\u2019artiste pirate les codes et une r\u00e9flexion<br \/>piquante sur ce que l\u2019humain consid\u00e8re comme lui \u00e9tant proche ou \u00e9tranger. Composites, ses toiles<br \/>donnent \u00e0 voir certains types de motifs ou d\u2019\u00e9critures qui sont autant de citations renvoyant \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art et \u00e0 la<br \/>repr\u00e9sentation en peinture.<\/p><p>Jouant avec les codes d\u2019une hypoth\u00e9tique \u00ab peinture exotique \u00bb, il inclut des \u00e9l\u00e9ments\u00a0st\u00e9r\u00e9otyp\u00e9s dans des compositions au ton parfois expressionniste. Ananas, palmiers, volcans, saucisses ou paraboles peuplent\u00a0alors plus particuli\u00e8rement les premi\u00e8res s\u00e9ries Homo Insularis (2006-2012) et Saadiyat, l&#8217;\u00eele du bonheur (2008, 2009).<\/p><p><br \/>Se r\u00e9f\u00e9rant aussi bien aux codes de la figuration que de l\u2019abstraction, ses tableaux se composent peu \u00e0 peu en plateaux et\u00a0\u00e9chappent aux principes de la perspective, en assumant les \u00ab formes plates \u00bb et le traitement de la profondeur par la couleur<br \/>et les textures. Avec les s\u00e9ries Plateformes (2013-2014), puis Archipel Vertical (2014-2016), l\u2019artiste introduit l\u2019id\u00e9e\u00a0d\u2019archipel \u00e0 son champ de recherche et aborde peu \u00e0 peu le paysage comme une sorte de cartographie sensible.<\/p><p>La peinture\u00a0devient pour lui un espace interm\u00e9diaire : \u00ab Le processus pour arriver au paysage est indissociable du paysage lui-m\u00eame \u00bb\u00a0dit-il, rendant lisible en surface le cheminement du geste et de la pens\u00e9e comme la qu\u00eate d\u2019un point d\u2019\u00e9quilibre. Partant d\u2019un noyau \u00e0 partir duquel se d\u00e9ploient dif\u00e9rents axes, les directions d\u00e9rivent pour finalement venir se\u00a0ramifier.<\/p><p>C\u2019est aussi l\u2019id\u00e9e de rhizome, ch\u00e8re \u00e0 Deleuze et Guattari (dans Mille Plateaux) et reprise par Edouard Glissant dans\u00a0sa pens\u00e9e archip\u00e9lique. Des \u00eelots se forment ainsi entre les structures, dans des jeux d\u2019\u00e9clatements et de glissements du fond\u00a0\u00e0 la forme, faisant \u00e9tat de passages entre la spontan\u00e9it\u00e9 du geste et les proc\u00e9d\u00e9s techniques de superpositions, de r\u00e9p\u00e9titions,\u00a0d\u2019agglom\u00e9rations et d\u2019effacements.<\/p><p>L\u2019espace se stratifie et le temps s\u2019allonge enfin dans la s\u00e9rie Purgatoire (2016-2020). Dans ces peintures, les \u00e9l\u00e9ments\u00a0picturaux s\u2019isolent, flottent ou se rencontrent jusqu\u2019\u00e0 cr\u00e9er un embryon de formes, de figures, d\u2019architectures.<\/p><p>Les toiles\u00a0r\u00e9v\u00e8lent ainsi des stigmates en surface, s\u2019\u00e9vaporant parfois sous les repentirs. Elles s\u2019\u00e9laborent par \u00ab stations \u00bb, comme un\u00a0\u00e9cho au religieux \u2013 \u00e9galement pr\u00e9gnant dans la culture cr\u00e9ole \u2013 le purgatoire \u00e9voquant ce point d\u2019\u00e9tape, cet \u00ab entre-deux \u00bb.<\/p><p>\u00ab J\u2019accumule des traces, je d\u00e9pose de la mati\u00e8re en proportion diff\u00e9rente, au fur et \u00e0 mesure ces traces deviennent des signes\u00a0et le principe de\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">\u00ab<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-primary-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-primary-font-weight ); color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">par\u00e9idolie \u00bb (o\u00f9 le cerveau reconna\u00eet des formes anthropomorphes ou zoomorphes dans l\u2019informel) guide\u00a0<\/span>en partie la composition des tableaux \u00bb.<\/p><p><br \/>La peinture de Cristof D\u00e8nmont, par le prisme de la toile comme surface de projection intuitive d\u2019une \u00eele et de son\u00a0imaginaire, nous invite ainsi \u00e0 reconstituer par le biais d\u2019indices visuels le sens, l\u2019image ou l\u2019histoire qu\u2019elle contient.<\/p><p>Le\u00efla Quillacq,
